These terms supplement our Terms of Service and apply when you connect a domain name to a website you run with OS iXanagi, or ask CloudEffects LLC ("CloudEffects," "we") to register or manage a domain name for you. By doing either, you agree to these terms.
A custom domain can be connected to the OS iXanagi surfaces we make available for it under your plan or your agreement with us — such as the public websites you publish, and, where agreed, a console or a customer portal on your domain. Unless we have agreed to provide them on your domain, the OS iXanagi consoles are reached at the addresses we specify. These terms apply to every surface you connect to a domain.
1. Two ways to connect a domain
| A. Registered through CloudEffects | B. Kept at your own registrar | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the domain is registered | Amazon Route 53, through the account CloudEffects operates (section 2) | the registrar you chose |
| Who manages DNS | CloudEffects | you, at your registrar or DNS provider (section 9) |
| Renewal | CloudEffects renews it as agreed (section 4) | you |
| What we can do for you | registration, renewal, DNS and certificates | only tell you what to set; we cannot change anything there |
2. Domains registered through CloudEffects
We register domains with Amazon Route 53. The registrar of record is Amazon Registrar, Inc., or the registrar Route 53 uses for that top-level domain (TLD); you can look it up with ICANN's lookup tool. The domain is registered with you (your organization) as the registrant, and we manage it on your behalf.
The following also apply and form part of these terms: the registrar's domain name registration agreement, ICANN consensus policies (including the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy, the Transfer Policy, the Expired Registration Recovery Policy and the Registration Data Policy) and the terms of the registry operator for the TLD. Some TLDs (for example, ones for regulated industries or a specific country) have extra eligibility requirements. If these terms conflict with the registrar's agreement on a registration matter, the registrar's agreement prevails.
3. What a registration is
A domain registration is a right to use a name for a limited term under the registrar's and registry's rules. It is not ownership or property. CloudEffects does not claim any right to your domain name, and you may move it to another registrar as section 6 describes.
4. Fees and renewal
- We tell you the registration, renewal and transfer fees before we register or transfer a domain, and charge them as agreed with you. Fees are set by the registry and registrar and may change at renewal.
- While your subscription is active, we renew the domain before it expires unless you tell us not to. A renewal fee is not refundable once the domain has been renewed.
- If a domain expires, restoring it during the registrar's grace or redemption period may cost an additional fee, and after that period it may be deleted and become available to anyone.
- The registrar sends the renewal notices ICANN requires to the registrant contact, and we also notify you before expiry. Keeping your contact details current so these notices reach you is your responsibility.
5. Registration data and privacy
ICANN requires accurate contact details for every domain. You must give us accurate, complete information and keep it current. The registrar may email the registrant to verify the address; if it is not verified in time, the domain may be suspended.
Registration data is shared with the registrar, the registry and ICANN as their policies require, and may be published in the public registration data service (RDAP / WHOIS). Where the TLD allows it, we turn on the registrar's privacy protection, which hides your contact details from the public record. We handle your personal information as our Privacy Policy describes.
6. Transfers
You may transfer a domain registered through us to another registrar. On request, we unlock the domain and give you the authorization code, unless the transfer is not allowed at that time — for example within 60 days after registration or a previous transfer, while a dispute is pending, or while fees are unpaid. When your account is closed, we give you the authorization code for each domain; a domain you do not transfer is not renewed after that.
7. Acceptable use and disputes
You may not register or use a domain in violation of our Acceptable Use Policy, the registrar's and registry's policies or the law — including infringing others' trademarks or other rights, phishing or other fraud, spam, distributing malware, or taking a domain without authority.
If someone claims that your domain infringes their trademark, you may have to take part in a proceeding under the UDRP or the Uniform Rapid Suspension System (URS), and the domain may be transferred or cancelled as a result. We and the registrar will follow the decisions of those proceedings and of courts.
8. Suspension and cancellation
The registrar, the registry or CloudEffects may suspend, cancel or transfer a domain registration where the registrant data is inaccurate, a verification request goes unanswered, the domain is used in violation of section 7, fees are unpaid, or a dispute decision, court order or law requires it. Where reasonable, we tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.
9. Domains at another registrar: DNS settings
If your domain stays at another registrar or DNS provider, you keep control of it, and CloudEffects normally cannot see or change its settings. To connect it, you add the records we send you for each surface you connect, at your provider:
- Certificate validation records (CNAME). We use them to issue and automatically renew the TLS certificate for your domain. Keep them for as long as the domain is connected; if they are removed, the certificate cannot be renewed and visitors will see a security warning when it expires.
- A record that points your domain at OS iXanagi.
- For a subdomain (such as
wwworshop): a CNAME record to the hostname we give you. - For the root domain (such as
example.com): an ALIAS, ANAME or flattened CNAME record to that hostname, if your provider supports one. A plain CNAME is not allowed at the root, and the address behind the hostname changes, so do not set fixed A records. If your provider does not support these, you can either delegate the domain's name servers to a Route 53 zone we manage for you (the registration stays at your registrar), or serve the site onwwwand redirect the root domain at your provider.
- For a subdomain (such as
When your website uses the root domain, we serve it there and redirect www to it, so both should point at OS iXanagi. Leave your other records — such as MX records for email — as they are; we do not need them. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to take effect.
Because these settings are made by you at a provider we do not manage, we are not responsible for interruptions caused by changes there — for example records that were removed, a domain that expired at your registrar, or your provider's outage. We will help you find the cause and tell you what to set.
10. Sanctions and export controls
We cannot provide domain services to persons or entities subject to United States or United Nations sanctions, or for use in comprehensively sanctioned countries or regions. We may refuse or suspend domain services where we cannot confirm that these restrictions do not apply.
11. Your rights as a registrant
ICANN publishes the rights and responsibilities of domain registrants. We recommend reading them, and nothing in these terms limits them.
12. Changes
We may update these terms when ICANN policies, registry requirements or our registrar's terms change. Material changes are notified as our Terms of Service describe; a change required by ICANN or by law may take effect immediately.
13. Contact
